I awoke in a cold sweat this morning. Half delirious from the nightmare I'd just escaped from. It didn't help matters that a scarecrow was hangin' above my bed. Swingin' around in a tormenting circle of neverending pain. Who was it tryin' to scare? Was this an omen of some kind? Who put it there? These were all questions I'd have to find the answers to after breakfast.
Sometimes when you're lookin' real hard for a clue, you tend to miss the most obvious stuff. That's why I started thinkin' back to what had happened last night. I like to think I have one o' them photographical memories. It's just a matter of closing the eyes and watching the scene develop on the inside of your eyelids.
I watched myself as I searched the stiff for clues. Frantic as I wus I knew I musta missed somethin' obvious. I noticed a shiny lapel pin on his jacket. Took me a while to focus my memory purely on that badge. But it sure payed off. This kind of investigative memory technique is often referred to by experts as the minds built-in "enhancement mode". It's one of my many talents.
